If you had watched the science fiction movie Minority Report, you would be dreaming of having the wall sized displays, gesture recognition, and seamless information convergence which were all part of the film. Still I have fond memories the way Tom Cruise calls up and manipulates the video footage and other data via an intuitive interface. Closer to reality the first step to getting there (like an intuitive display) is a direct human touch.
In fact, the way things are moving we are getting closer to The Minority Report’s idea of interfaces. Point-and-click, thumbwheel, trackballs, stylus and other such user interfaces will be replaced with gestures and direct human touch, across devices.
Microsoft Surface, which has a 30-inch display under a hard-plastic tabletop, allows people to touch and move objects on screen for everything from digital finger painting and jigsaw puzzles to ordering off a virtual menu in a restaurant.
It also recognizes and interacts with devices placed on its surface, so cell phone users can easily buy ringtones or change payment plans by placing their handsets on in-store displays, or a group of people gathered round the table can check out the photos on a digital camera placed on top…..looks like a dream!
So, you are eager to look at "Surface Computer" – as usual we have Youtube (definitely not from Microsoft)!
