Ribbit - Silicon Valley's First Phone Company

Do you like to make calls from highly customizable phone network that works with all kinds of devices and applications i.e. you can make calls to and fro from landlines, mobile phones, internet telephony software running on their PCs, desktop widgets, social networking applications, Flash-based phones and even web browsers…quite imaginative isn’t it!

Well, now you can truly have all the features from a “Silicon Valley’s first phone company,” known as “Ribbit” which aims to be the first company for Voice 2.0 applications.

You may argue that company such as Skype offers APIs for developers to create new applications, but these applications are limited to only one telephony provider and generally require a native application to be installed but by using Ribbit you can have the hitting done to all web 2.0 buttons which is some thing every one is looking for. If Ribbit successfully climbs the super wall by providing the applications, it will be better than anything……way to go guys!

Startup Sunday!

Let’s start discussion like this - for a start-up, the difference between success and failure is primarily the result of the quality of its few top champions and their collective endeavour. But entrepreneurs often grapple with issues within this small group and lose much energy that could otherwise be spent on building the business…..do you agree!

Do you think as an “entrepreneurs you need to know every thing”, this is certainly wrong based on my experience working in a start up. I believe it is not practical for a business executive to have all the skills and strengths required to take a start-up to success. A small team with common beliefs is a key necessity.

10 - 11.30: Presentation of iHoll by Ishwar and Aishwarya. Both of them are graduates of IIM-B and are moonlighting on this venture while working on their respective jobs. iHoll is a online market place with a difference. Unlike traditional eCommerce site, here the sequence of operations on iHoll are envisaged to be different with more interactions between the buyer and the seller. They are look for critical feedback from the audience. In addition they are also looking out for individuals who can take care of the technical requirements of this venture.

11.30 - 12..30: Session on 'The Essentials of a Term Sheet' by Ms. Dhanya Menon of ALMT Legal, Bangalore.

12.30 - 13.00 Presentation of MyDuniya (www.myduniya. in). MyDuniya offers a suite of services of day-to-day use, leveraging the convenience of the "Mobile" and the power of the "Web". They have a bunch of simple yet useful information services that can be set on the web and the information can be access using mobile any time.

Britannica vs Wikipedia vs Knol

As a regular surfer, chances are that you would have referred to Wikipedia (the online encyclopedia) and perhaps contributed to it, or even edited it. Not surprisingly, it is one of the best examples of collaboration and use of open source software on the World Wide Web. Thanks to its open source nature, it costs almost zilch to create and keep it running.

Wikipedia, which boasts of content that is four times that of Encyclopedia Britannica, is also showcased as one of the most successful ventures in the open source world.

Now Google in entering the Wikipedia game through “Knol”. The big difference is User’s can put their names and Google’s advertisements on their knoll pages and split the revenues with the search company….quite a way to make money (Google way!).

Knol is also a wiki-like platform. Authors can create topics, and there are tools to interlink articles and content, but "knol," is "just like a Web page." Where it differs from a wiki is its focus on the author. All knols will highlight who wrote them.

The Knol is still in the experimental stage and if you think you can try it out then you have to wait for the invitation from the Google guys!
